First Nation Home will see teams from Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales go head to head in a 1000-mile race involving sweat, tears and possibly a little blood. All in the name of charity, of course...

In what is being billed as the biggest Sport Relief Challenge ever, teams representing each nation will start from their capital city and race clockwise round the British Isles trying to be the first nation home.

The route across hill, dale, land and sea will involve running, rowing, cycling and sailing.

The seven-day challenge will culminate on the 6th of March 2012 with a race to the finish (on foot) for each country. Up to 1000 participants from each nation will be asked to take part in the final running stage, with the BBC filming the event.

The challenge is the brainchild of former Scotland rugby international Cameron Mather. Since retiring from professional rugby in 2004, Mather worked as marketing manager for the Caledonian Brewery in Edinburgh before conceiving the idea for the First Nation Home challenge.

He called on former Scotland and Leeds Tykes teammate Stewart Campbell to get Tigershark Multimedia Productions involved to help with production of the promotional video.

The video, which will be distributed online via the BBC website and Sport Relief website, had to be shot in total secrecy in order to keep the event details under wraps.

Some of the UK’s brightest young sporting stars were only too pleased to help out with the promotional shoot, including Jessica Ennis, Stuart Broad, Jonny Wilkinson, Dame Ellen MacArthur, Andy Murray and Iwan Thomas.

Biggest ever Sport Relief challenge!
Participants representing the four home nations will include:-

  • Team England: Ben Fogle, Chris Boardman, Josh Lewsey

  • Team Wales: Joe Calzaghe, Gareth Thomas, Iwan Thomas

  • Team Ireland: Craig Doyle, Paddy Johns, Sonia O’Sullivan

  • Team Scotland: Graeme OBree, Tom Evans, Andrea McLean

Sport can change lives
All the money raised by the public for Sport Relief is spent by Comic Relief to help people living incredibly tough lives, both at home in the UK and across the world's poorest countries.

In the UK, funds raised are spend providing comfort and help to vulnerable older people. It also helps people in disadvantaged communities living with poor mental or physical health or a lack of job opportunities.

Overseas, money raised protects and supports children who live on the streets. It provides lifesaving healthcare and access to clean water for those who are too poor to pay for it.

Since 2002 Sport Relief has raised more than £108m for worthwhile causes, including a record-breaking £44m in 2010  - a total the organisers will be hoping to exceed in 2012.
